MOROCCO · SUGGESTED ONE-WAY SAHARA JOURNEY

Marrakech to Fes
via the Sahara

A proposed five-day journey connecting Marrakech and Fes through the High Atlas, the valleys of southern Morocco and Merzouga. An extra day around the dunes gives this route a different rhythm from the four-day Marrakech loop.

Five days of route inspiration, shaped around your plans. Overnight locations, activities, services and prices need confirmation before booking.

Travel pace

Long transfers + desert pause

Two cities, with the Sahara between

This suggested journey is for travellers who want to begin in Marrakech and continue to Fes rather than return to their starting city. The southbound stages cross the High Atlas and the Dades region before reaching Merzouga. From the Sahara, the route turns north through the Ziz Valley and Midelt towards the Middle Atlas and Fes.

The proposed third day stays around Merzouga, creating more time in the desert region between travel days. It is still a road-focused journey with several long transfers. Use the extra day to discuss the pace and experiences you want, rather than assuming a particular activity is included.

How the landscape changes

Atlas & Dades
Mountain roads, earthen architecture and southern valleys.

Merzouga
Time near the dunes of Erg Chebbi, with your desert plans agreed in advance.

Ziz Valley & Middle Atlas
A northbound route towards the historic city of Fes.

These are route highlights. Guided visits, excursions, entrance fees and desert experiences must be specified in your quotation.

Your proposed five-day route

The outline below follows the existing suggested itinerary. It is a starting point for a conversation, with overnight locations, transport, stops and timing to be confirmed.

DAY 01

Marrakech → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades

Set out from Marrakech across the High Atlas towards Ait Ben Haddou, then continue to the Dades Valley. Mountain scenery gives way to the earthen architecture and valley landscapes of southern Morocco.

Agree your departure, pickup point and time for stops. The first day covers a substantial road stage; the overnight location in the Dades region needs confirmation.

DAY 02

Dades → Todra area → Merzouga

Continue through the Todra area towards Merzouga. The suggested route moves from valley scenery to the edge of the Sahara, where the dunes of Erg Chebbi become the focus.

Discuss arrival timing and your accommodation preference before confirming. A lodge, camp stay, camel ride or other desert activity is not included automatically.

DAY 03

A day around Merzouga

Keep this proposed day in the Merzouga area instead of beginning the northbound journey immediately. It provides room for desert scenery and a slower pause between transfers.

Choose how you would like to spend the time. Any guided outing, transport, camp arrangement or activity needs to be agreed, along with its cost and practical conditions.

DAY 04

Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt

Leave Merzouga and travel north through the Ziz Valley towards Midelt. This proposed overnight stop divides the journey from the desert to Fes into two stages.

This is another travel day. Stops, road conditions, departure time and the exact overnight location will determine the final schedule.

DAY 05

Midelt → Middle Atlas → Fes

Continue through the Middle Atlas towards Fes, the finish of this suggested route. Agree the stops and drop-off location so the final stage fits the next part of your Morocco trip.

The route ends on arrival in Fes. Accommodation afterwards, guided city visits and onward transfers are separate arrangements to discuss, not assumed inclusions.

Plan the journey around your onward travel

A one-way route changes the practical details: your luggage travels with you, and your pickup in Marrakech and finish in Fes need to fit your wider plans. Tell us where you intend to stay before and after the journey so the meeting and drop-off arrangements can be discussed.

The pause around Merzouga does not remove the longer driving stages. Mountain roads, stops, seasonal daylight and conditions affect what is comfortable each day. Share your tolerance for driving, accessibility needs and accommodation preferences when enquiring.

The five-day outline ends on arrival in Fes. Time to explore the city afterwards is a separate planning decision; do not assume a city tour or a same-day flight connection is included or practical. Discuss additional nights if you want a gentler finish.

Agree the route and services in writing

No fixed price or inclusion list has been confirmed for this suggested five-day journey. Request a quotation for your actual dates and group, with enough detail to understand what is arranged and what you will pay separately.

What your quotation should clarify

01   Marrakech pickup, Fes drop-off and daily route.

02   Four overnight stays, room types and the Merzouga arrangements.

03   Vehicle, luggage capacity, driver and any guiding.

04   Meals, visits, entry fees and chosen desert activities.

05   Total cost, exclusions and payment arrangements.

06   Conditions for changes, cancellation and travel requirements.

A planning checklist, not a promise that these services are included.

Questions about the five-day journey

Does this route return to Marrakech?

No. This suggested five-day route begins in Marrakech and finishes in Fes. If you need to return to Marrakech, compare the four-day Sahara loop or discuss another route. Pickup and drop-off points must be agreed before booking.

Why spend an extra day around Merzouga?

The proposed third day stays in the desert region instead of moving on immediately. It gives you time to discuss a slower day and any experiences you would like to request. The activity programme, accommodation and costs remain to be confirmed.

Is a camp stay or camel ride part of the tour?

No services are included by default in this proposed outline. Ask specifically about a camp, lodge, camel ride or other experience, and confirm the arrangements, conditions and cost in the written quotation.

Can I connect with a flight from Fes on Day 5?

Do not rely on a specific arrival time from this outline. The final drive, stops and drop-off arrangements must be confirmed first. Share any flight or onward travel plans when enquiring, and discuss whether an additional night in Fes would be more practical.

What should I send to receive a quotation?

Send your dates, number of travellers, Marrakech pickup preferences and plans after arriving in Fes. Include the pace, accommodation and activities you would like to discuss. Request a written itinerary and total quotation with inclusions, exclusions and terms before booking.
